Groton Ed Officials: Out-of-District Magnet Schools Hurt Us

More than 400 Groton students are attending magnet schools in other districts.

A state moratorium that prevents Groton from establishing its own magnet schools has placed the community at a competitive disadvantage, according to local education officials.

Nearby New London was allowed to go to an all-magnet school format, which has lured hundreds of Groton students, and according to state rules, Groton must pay the tuition and transportation costs for those pupils.

This school year, Groton will spend nearly $2.7 million sending students to other districts, most notably New London, reports The Day.

“We have plenty of parents who are sending their children to other schools and, ultimately, that really hurts us,” Groton Schools Superintendent Michael Graner told The Day.
