Groton Hosts 5K for Wounded Warriors, Honors Those Lost

Dozens laced up and sprinted for the finish line to support the cause.

GROTON, CT- Dozens turned out in Groton on Saturday to raise money for wounded warriors, NBC Connecticut reported.

The event started off at Bluff Point State Park, where participants gathered to help wounded veterans across the country through running, according to NBC Connecticut. An opening ceremony before the race paid tribute to “warrior of the day” SFC Micah Wellintukonis, who was hit by a suicide bomb after 17 years in the Army and survived.

Special flags were handed out to families of veterans who did not return home, NBC Connecticut reported. It has been made a tradition due to the emotional response from families who are able to carry on their spouse or child’s legacy in a literal sense.
