Groton Rotary Club Installs New Officers

The new Rotary year is here. The club's motto is "Service Above Self." John Silsby is the club's president for the coming year.

John Silsby will serve as president of the Groton Rotary Club for the 2016-17 Rotary year. He succeeds Tricia Cunningham.

Club officers were officially sworn in at a special dinner meeting held recently at the Mystic Marriott Hotel.

Other new officers are: Gary Weale, president-elect; Richard Kent Jr., vice president; Diane Thomas, secretary; and Lea Doran, treasurer.

At large members of the Board of Directors are: Greg Thevenet, John Scott, R.B. Kent, Lian Obrey, Peter Grader, Bill Anhalt, and Michael Whitehouse. All club officers also serve as Board members. They are, Silsby, Weale, Thomas, Doran, Kent, Jr., and Cunningham, as past president.

Installed members of the Groton Rotary Foundation Board are Lee Vincent, chair; Bo Bohannon, Frank Winkler, and Dave Brown.

The Groton Rotary Club meets from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. each Tuesday of the month. All meetings are held at the Octagon Restaurant in the Mystic Marriott Hotel on Route 117 in Groton.

The Groton Rotary Club raises funds throughout the year to help finance grants to local non-profit organizations and to fund scholar awards to students at Fitch Senior High School, the Ella T. Grasso Southeastern Technical High School and the Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton.

Local non-profit organizations receiving grants during the past year and the use for the grant, include the Town of Groton Recreation Department for an adaptive swing for Sutton Park; the Bill Memorial Library for a display case to be used as a mini-museum; Riverfront Children’s Center for a Peace and Tranquility Garden; Fairview Odd Fellows Home of CT for a memory station display, and Art on Groton Park for an exhibit to mark 100 years of the submarine service in Groton.

The Groton Rotary Club also sponsors two dinners each year at the Groton Senior Center and clean-ups on Thomas Road at Birch Plain Creek each year.
