Groton School Earns National Blue Ribbon Award

GROTON, CT — Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton has been named a National Blue Ribbon school. The award is given annually to select schools across the nation for demonstrating overall high achievement or success in closing achievement gaps.

The high school was one of four in the state to win the award. It won in the "exemplary high performing" category.

Marine Science Magnet High School is a school of choice and operated by LEARN, southeastern Connecticut's regional educational service center, according to a statement from Gov. Ned Lamont. More than 30 communities are represented by the 271 students enrolled in grades 9 to 12.

The high school "demonstrates consistently strong performance based on the Next Generation Accountability System." In 2021 and 2022, the school earned 86.6% of all possible points across all indicators leading to School of Distinction status for the fourth consecutive year.

The high school was also commended for its high graduation rate and offerings in Advanced Placement and dual credit courses across all subject areas resulting in 80.8% of grades 11 and 12 students earning three or more college credits prior to graduation.

“What a fantastic tribute to the hardworking, creative and dedicated educators and students at Marine Science Magnet High School," Sen. Heather Somers (R-Groton) said in a statement. "I have visited the school on numerous occasions. It is has a cutting edge atmosphere where students can experience and take part in real world solutions to the challenges we face in our marine environment."

Rep. Aundré Bumgardner (D – Groton, Stonington) provided the following statement on the school earning this award:

“Congratulations to the students, faculty, and staff at Marine Science Magnet High School for this prestigious award! The school has worked incredibly hard to set up students for success after graduation. I want to recognize all the educators who are guiding our youth on a path toward a bright future. The four-year graduation rate for current 11th grade students is 100%, which is spectacular."
