Groton WWII Veteran Receives French Legion of Honor

He was among 15 bestowed the highest decoration from France.

GROTON, CT- A local World War II veteran has received the French Legion of Honor, the highest decoration bestowed by France, as reported by The Day.

Groton resident Marty Schames, 94, was appointed by French President Francois Hollande, according to The Day. He was among 15 American veterans honored for their service in France at the French Embassy in New York this past May.

Schames was assigned to the 15th Bomb Squadron after joining the Army in 1941, The Day reported. He participated in the British-American invasion of French North Africa called Operation Torch.
