Man Assaulted, Injured Officers In Groton, Police Say

A man drove drunk with a child in the car, fled from police, then had a violent encounter with officers, police said.

GROTON, CT — A man is facing accusations that he drove drunk with a child in the car, then fled from police and assaulted officers, according to police.

City of Groton police responded to a report of a suspicious motor vehicle at 9:48 a.m., Tuesday on Mellow Avenue.

An officer found the vehicle. When he approached the vehicle, he found the driver smelled like alcohol. There was also a child in the vehicle's back seat who wasn't wearing a seat belt.

The driver, Joseph Duquette, 36, of Groton, refused to get out of the vehicle, according to police.

The officer opened the door to arrest him, but Duquette drove off while the officer was holding onto him, injuring the officer's arm, police said.

Duquette fled but police found him a short distance away at his home. He ran from the vehicle into his home with officers chasing him. He had his child in his arms, according to police.

Duquette struggled with officers, resisting arrest. Officers were able to get him under control and took him into custody, but three officers suffered minor injuries during the struggle. Duquette also suffered minor injuries.

Duquette was charged with operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, reckless driving, traveling unreasonably fast, two counts of risk of injury to a child, two counts of interfering with an officer, three counts of assault on police, and motor vehicle charges.

He was held on $100,000 cash/surety bond and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
