Man Rescued From Water By Bystanders In Noank Dies: Report

A man who was rescued from the water by Good Samaritans in Noank earlier this month has died, according to a report.

GROTON, CT — A man rescued from the water by Good Samaritans earlier this month has died, according to The Day of New London.

The man was Douglas Crawford, 66, of Westerly, RI.

Town of Groton police responded May 4 at 4:11 p.m. on a report of a man in the water near Spicer's Marina.

Crawford had been moving his belongings from his boat to his vehicle. A man had heard a splash and went over to help Crawford, The Day reported. Police arrived and found bystanders were helping Crawford.

He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Crawford was "a life-long seafarer" who "loved the ocean," according to his obituary.

He made a career in the Merchant Marine on seagoing tugboats and barges. He had recently retired from full-time tugboat service and was about to begin teaching at a maritime training and education center in Maryland when he died, according to his obituary.

He also served on the board of the Watch Hill Lighthouse Keepers Association and worked with engineers to protect the Watch Hill Lighthouse from erosion.
