Man Struggles With Officers, Arrested On Drug Charges In Groton

Police said a New York man struggled on the ground with officers as they attempted to arrest him on drug charges.

GROTON, CT - Police said officers arrested a New York man Thursday, June 29, at approximately 12:53 p.m. on drug charges. The suspect was charged after Groton Town police officers initiated an investigation into the sale of heroin in southeastern Connecticut, according to a release.

Police said Thomas P. Gomez, 39, of Brooklyn, New York, was found to be in possession of heroin that was packaged for sale. He was arrested in Groton in the parking lot of a local business, police said. (To sign up for Groton breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Police were assisted by The Regional Community Enhancement Task Force, which is comprised of detectives and officers from southeastern Connecticut seeking to combat the heroin epidemic in the area and to improve the quality of life for citizens,

Police said the suspect forcefully resisted officers' attempts to arrest him, causing himself and task force members to fall to the ground. The struggle resulted in a minor injury to both the suspect and one of the task force members, police said.

The suspect was treated by EMS at the scene and subsequently transported to the Groton Town Police Department. He has been charged with possession of heroin with intent to sell and interfering/resisting arrest, and is scheduled to appear in court July 13, police said.
