Noank’s Ambassadors: Sailing Fishermen, 1900-1910

Tales of storms, fish, and other forms of maritime mayhem presented by John Wilbur, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21

Noank Historical Society presents Noank’s Ambassadors: Sailing Fishermen, 1900-1910, tales of storms, fish, and other forms of maritime mayhem presented by John Wilbur, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21 at The Latham/Chester Store, 108 Main St., Noank.

Noank Historical Society is pleased to invite the public to learn about the sailing fishermen of Noank at the turn of the 20th Century. Meet the ambassadors of Noank: Henry Langworthy, Wallace Brown, Jimmie Sistare, and the Latham Brothers. Take a short fishing trip on the schooner Benjamin W. Latham. The presenter of this fare is John Wilbur, who comes from a long line of Noank-born Wilburs (even though he himself was born in New London). Educated at great public expense at the US Merchant Marine Academy, he has been employed aboard various ships and boats his entire professional career. Currently, John plies Long Island Sound for Cross Sound Ferry. When not at sea, sound, or river, he is either walking dogs, taking photographs, or researching the history of Noank, but mostly wondering where all the time has gone.

The public is cordially invited. Refreshments will be served.
