GROTON, CT — A construction vehicle hit a light post base in the parking lot of Groton-New London Airport, causing a fuel spill, according to a Facebook post from Poquonnock Bridge Professional Firefighters Local 2704.

The accident and associated fuel spill was reported at 8:35 a.m.

The crash resulted in "the saddle tank being torn off." Then about 40 to 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the ground.

However, the firefighters' union noted there was "no impact on nearby drains or waterways."

Speedy Dry and absorbent pads were used to mop up the fuel spill.

The airport fire department assisted with cleanup efforts, and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the scene of the spill.

The trucking company is working in conjunction with the state agency to find a cleanup company to ensure a thorough cleanup of the spill.
