GROTON, CT — A number of people are upset following the demolition of a student-built shed at Ella T. Grasso Technical High School, the New London Day reported.

According to the Day, the shed was built during the 2013-14 school year by carpentry and electrical students. Its shell was torn down as contractors worked on a new school being constructed on-site.

The move was criticized on Facebook by State Sen. Heather Somers (Republican-Groton), whose post had been shared more than 1,400 times as of Tuesday afternoon.

"This shed was built with excess materials from the carpentry program that we are trying to save," Somers said on Facebook. "This could have been donated, re-purposed or even sold but the superintendent, the State Department of Education decides this is what should be done. This is what they think of our students work!"

Many commentators seemed to agree with Somers, with some calling the move "pathetic" and "sad."
