Talk: “SCUD Around The World (It Took A Village)”

Noank Historical Society presents a talk, “SCUD Around The World (It Took A Village)” presented by Mary Maynard Drake, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 15, at The Latham/Chester Store, Main Street, Noank.

Says Mary: “In 1960, my then-husband George Maynard and I began dreaming, reading and scheming of sailing around the world. But how? Where? It wasn’t until we arrived in the renowned boat-building village of Noank that everything came together. We had no funds to buy a sailboat capable of carrying five people safely around the world, but 19th-century Noank fishing boats made yearly winter trips to the Florida Keys to fish. Once we learned that SPRAY, the yawl Capt. Joshua Slocum sailed single-handedly around the world in 1895-1898, had been part of the Noank fishing fleet, we knew that was the boat for us. All we had to do was build it ... and that’s where Noankers came into our dream. This is our story, and theirs.”

The public is cordially invited. Refreshments will be served. For more information visit www.noankhistoricalsociety.org
