Ulysses B. Hammond Named To Chelsea Groton Bank Board

GROTON, CT—Retired Connecticut College vice president and former D.C. Court System executive officer Ulysses B. Hammond was named to the Chelsea Groton Bank’s Board of Trustees. A former bank corporator and foundation board member, Hammond has spent nearly three decades in public service at all levels of government.

“Ulysses’ extensive background in administration and public service makes him an ideal addition to our Board of Trustees,” said bank CEO Michael Rauh. “Ulysses is a respected leader in the region. He is well-known by many organizations and individuals alike, and his insight and experience will help us better serve our local communities. I look forward to working more closely with Ulysses, and to the contributions he will undoubtedly make as a member of our Board.”

Hammond served as Chief Executive Officer of the District of Columbia Courts from 1990 to 2000. He was the first African-American in the U.S. to administer an appellate and general jurisdiction court system. He also served as Associate State Court Administrator for the Michigan Supreme Court, and the Court executive for the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Detroit.

In 2000, Hammond joined Connecticut College serving as Vice President for Administration until his retirement in 2015. During his 15 years there, he was the Chief Business and Operations Officer, overseeing legal and community affairs, contract administration, property, space and land management, including academic, athletic, and administrative facilities on a 750-acre campus. The highlight of his tenure was a $100 million capital project, which included the creation of a fitness center, and the renovation of the library and science center.

Hammond has over 35 years of board and community service. Hammond was president of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Fund for 10 years and is a past Board Chair of Lawrence + Memorial Healthcare System, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT and the United Way of Southeastern CT. In addition to his role on the Chelsea Groton Foundation Board and service as a Chelsea Groton Bank Corporator, he is currently the Chair of the Connecticut Mirror Board of Directors, Mitchell College President's Council, and Town of Waterford Elections Moderator.

Among the accolades bestowed upon Hammond are the Liberty Bell Award from the New London County Bar Association, the William Crawford Distinguished Service Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT, an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Kenyon College, as well as having a Connecticut College building renamed for him.

Hammond earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kenyon College, a Master of Public Administration from Wayne State University, and a Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University Law School. He lives in Waterford.
