GUILFORD, CT — The Guilford Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing on Nov. 2 on proposed amendments to the farm tax exemptions.
The selectmen are considering expanding the tax exemptions for farm machinery and farm buildings. The proposed ordinance amendment would raise the property tax exemption for farm machinery from $100,000 to $500,000 of assessed value, and from $100,000 to $500,000 for farm buildings.
State law sets a minimum exemption of $250,000 for machinery, and towns can add their own exemption up to another $250,000.
Brendan Crowley in the Selectmen's Office told Patch that, based on the 2025 grand list, the Assessor's office estimates that if everyone eligible claimed the full proposed exemption, it would reduce the town's tax revenue by about $4,400 in total.
The public hearing is scheduled to take place at the beginning of the regular Board of Selectmen meeting at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 2 at Guilford Town Hall, 31 Park St. The public hearing will also be broadcast via Microsoft Teams.
The public hearing notice and more information on the proposed amendments can be found here.
