Big utility scam hitting Guilford residents

Scammers pretending to be with your electric company are calling and threatening to shut off your electricity if you don’t pay them immediately. The scammers typically ask you to buy gift cards or various other types of payment methods like Western Union to pay up.

The electric company will send you a bill... and if you are close to a shut off notice... you will get another bill... and envelope that reads URGENT or TIME SENSITIVE... and there is still a process after that before you are shut off. Often times these scammers call on a Friday night or weekend when you can no longer reach customer service and feel compelled to comply to keep your electricity on...

It’s just another scam that has yielded these criminals income and they will keep at it until they stop making money from unsuspecting victims.
