Hutchinson has been chief since 2015 and had been on the Guilford force for over 25 years.

Police Commission Chairman Mike Mikolay explained that in the chief’s contract there is clauses that the commission needs to decide 180 days in advance of the pact’s expiration whether it wants to seek an extension.

Since the chief’s contract expires on June 30th of next year, that’s why the vote was taken, Mikolay explained.

Mikolay said the commission is more than happy with the job the chief has done “leading our fine department.”

He added: “Regarding next steps, I would anticipate that we should be able to come to terms with the chief over the course of the next weeks and vote to approve his new agreement at a future commission meeting.”
