Join Jim Powers on his talk about Shaumpishuh, the Quinnipiac Sachem of Mennunkatuck. Shaumpishuh played a leading role in negotiating the arrival and settlement of the English colonists who sailed into New Haven Harbor in April 1638 and in 1639 when a second group of colonists under the leadership of Reverend Henry Whitfield wanted to settle in Mennunkatuck.
This talk will detail the important role Shaumpishuh played in protecting and securing for her people a way to live along side the English colonists throughout her life and why she is now recognized as an important Indigenous leader during the early Colonial Era. Information will be shared about the effort by the Shaumpishuh Statue Committee to have a statue of her placed in the center of Guilford to honor her and the Quinnipiac people who lived in the Shoreline for 14,000 years.
This talk is free and all are welcome. Note: the photo is an image of Shaumpishuh's "signature" on the Mennunkatuck Agreement of 1639.
