CT Lt. Gov.'s Brother ID'd As Victim In Car V. Bike Hit & Run: Report

GUILFORD, CT —The victim in the car versus bicycle hit-and-run in Guilford Saturday was identified by the Hartford Courant as Branford resident John Bysiewicz, brother of Connecticut Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz.

Guilford police said the cyclist struck by a car driven by another Branford man was "severely injured" in the crash. It reported that Bysiewicz remains hospitalized. In a previous Patch story on the incident, the victim was not named by police.

According to Guilford Police Department Lieutenant Tim Bernier, Saturday at around 3:30 p.m., officers were called to investigate a car versus bicyclist collision in the 400 block of Leetes Island Road. Guilford police investigators would later arrest R. Neal Stom, 30, at his home in Branford, and charge him with evading responsibility with serious physical injury, Bernier said.

Stom, who Bernier said was driving a black 2018 Honda Accord Sport at the time of the collision, was released on a $100,000 bond.

Bysiewicz owns and operates JB Sports, a sports event management company, in Branford and has since 1989, according to the website. Bysiewicz is "known for increasing race participation and making races more profitable," it reads. Bysiewicz, a runner, cyclist and swimmer, "ran at UConn on the Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track teams," it's noted. Bysiewicz' company organizes New England’s top running events, it notes.

Before being seriously injured Saturday, earlier in the day Bysiewicz was at an event he organized, the Hot COCO 5K & 1-Mile Walk in Cheshire.

He and his company organize myriad popular and long-standing Connecticut road races including the Faxon Law New Haven Road Race, the Father's Day Branford Road Race, the upcoming Thanksgiving 5K in Branford, the Christopher Martin’s Christmas Run for Children set for Dec. 4, and numerous others.

The Guilford Police Department is requesting that homeowners and business owners with property on Route 146 between the intersection of Leetes Island Road at Sachems Head Road in Guilford to Limewood Avenue in Branford check for the existence of surveillance footage that may capture roadway traffic during the time frame of 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.

This section of Route 146 in Branford includes a portion of Leetes Island Road, Stony Creek Road, Totoket Road, a portion of Pine Orchard Road, Elizabeth Street, and a portion of Hotchkiss Grove Road.

Anyone with surveillance video covering this time frame is encouraged to contact the Guilford Police Department at 203-453-8061. And anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have any pertinent information related to the incident should call police at the same number.
