Guilford First Selectman Joseph Mazza Decides His Future
BREAKING: The first selectman has made a decision on whether he'll seek re-election.

GUILFORD, CT — First Selectman Joseph Mazza announced to department heads at their meeting on February 16, 2017 that he will not be running for a third term, according to a news release from his office.
When he completes his second term on December 4, 2017, Mr. Mazza will have held elected offices for
a total of 24 years. He served a total of 10 years on the Board of Finance beginning in 1993 and was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2003, where he served a total of six years. Mr. Mazza then became First Selectman in 2009 and at the end of this term will have served a total of eight years in that office.

“I have been very honored to serve the citizens of Guilford during all my years as an elected official,” said Mazza in a prepared statement. “I believe we have had many accomplishments in my two terms as first selectman.”
Among those accomplishments, the most significant, is the improvement to the town’s financial condition, including the continuous growth of the fund balance and acquisition of a AAA bond rating, the news release states.

Under this administration, the town has been recognized for its outstanding fiscal management, budgetary practices and sound financial policies. In addition, major improvements have been made to the town’s infrastructure, including the elevation of roads, particularly in the coastal areas. There has also been significant replacement of aging large scale public service and safety equipment as well as overall efficiencies within town departments, the release states.
During Mr. Mazza’s administration the town has seen substantial growth in Economic Development, which has contributed to the continued growth in the town’s Grand List during difficult economic times.
“I have enjoyed my work as first selectman of this wonderful town and I look forward to finishing out my term. Guilford is fortunate to have such dedicated employees, volunteers and residents, which has made this one of the best jobs I have ever had.”
