Guilford Police Caution Residents About a New Scam
Guilford police share details about the new scam and how you can protect yourself.

The following information was shared by the Guilford Police Department on Facebook:
************Be aware of this old scam that is rearing its ugly head again in Connecticut**************
There are a few scammers out there claiming to be from federal, state, or local agencies making cold calls or home visits to inform you that your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors need to be inspected per state statute. Those scammers will advise you they will be in the area conducting the inspections and will appear in some type of official looking clothing. Once inside, they will steal items from within your home or case it for a later date in preparation to commit a burglary.

However, there is NO state statute that authorizes anyone to randomly enter your home to make sure you have proper working smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. That is not to say you shouldn’t have them, but the police department, fire department or building department is not going to send someone to your door to randomly check your residence for working systems.
So if you get that scam call, tell them you are all set. If they come to your door, don’t let them in. Call 911 and try to provide a good description of the suspects and their vehicle.

The Guilford Fire Department will provide free inspections of your smoke and carbon monoxide systems UPON YOUR REQUEST or if they have responded to a fire emergency to your home. The Guilford Fire Department also participates in a program offering free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to those in town who are in need.
