Guilford Police Urge Residents to Take Precautions and Help Avoid Car Break-Ins

Police say 99 percent of vehicle burglaries in town are because car doors are not locked. They offer other tips.

99% of the vehicle burglaries here in Guilford are easily committed because the vehicle doors are not locked.

Most vehicle break ins are out of convenience and the suspects will pick an entire street or neighborhood and try the vehicle doors parked on the roadway, in the driveway and in the open garage.

The locked vehicles are not entered and the suspects move on to the easy targets. The best practice is to remove any items of value from the vehicle, or at a minimum, out of plain view, and then lock the vehicle.

Try to park your vehicle in a well lit area and, whenever possible, use motion activated flood lights. (Solar motion flood lights work great if wiring is an issue)

After a spree of vehicle burglaries, police officers canvas the neighborhoods and often find out that someone heard or saw something suspicious but "didn't want to bother the police with it."
