Human Milk Depot Opens in Guilford

Nursing moms can donate their extra milk.

GUILFORD, CT - The nation's first breast milk dispensary has opened in Guilford.

Called the Human Breast Milk Depot, the Boston Post Road location allows nursing moms to donate their extra milk, reports KITV.com and WFSB-TV. That milk then goes to premature babies of moms who cannot produce enough milk.

The depot is inside an Acelleron Medical Products store, which sells breast pumps and other nursing supplies.

"Sometimes the mom doesn't produce milk or maybe she has multiple children and making that much milk is just difficult," Jan Ferraro, Acelleron director of education for Connecticut, told WFSB. "It's for the tiniest babies who need the milk, that is who gets the milk."

Mother's Milk Bank Northeast processes the milk and blood-test donors before they give a supply.
