League of Women Voters Inaugurates Making Democracy Work Award
LWVES Making Democracy Work Award honors Rep. Sean Scanlon and budget workshop event.

The League of Women Voters of the East Shore is proud to announce that State Representative Sean Scanlon (D-98) is the recipient of their first Making Democracy Work® Award. The League selected Representative Scanlon to receive this award, as he was the originator of an exceptional event, the Citizens Budget Workshop, held in Guilford on April 24.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
With our mission in mind, the LWV of the East Shore regarded this public workshop structure to be a unique, creative and informative method to engage citizens with their state budget process. The hands-on exercise allowed citizens to participate and model the decision-making deliberations that legislators undertake while constructing the budget.

“We hope that other state elected officials will consider hosting this type of workshop to help their constituents more fully understand the complex budget process,” said Carol Reimers, President of LWV of the East Shore.
The League offers another opportunity for exploring the state budget process at their Annual Meeting and Dinner on June 7, 2017 with Martha Carlson, Deputy State Comptroller as the keynote speaker. This event, which will take place at Café Fiore in Branford, is open to the public. For reservations and dinner information, please contact the League at eastshoreleague@yahoo.com by June 4, 2017.
