Theft Of Car Parts Surge In Guilford

Police are urging residents to take precaution and be vigilant.

Written and shared by Guilford Police Department on Facebook:

There has been a recent increase in thefts of catalytic converters in Guilford. What's a catalytic converter you ask??? It's a metal object that is connected to your exhaust system which helps to reduce carbon emissions and noise. Catalytic converters contain some precious metals inside... so precious, that criminals steal them and scrap them, yielding between $150-$650 a piece. However, replacing this item can cost thousands of dollars.

Larger vehicles fall victim more often due to the fact that they are easier to get under and have more precious metal material. The most common locations that vehicles are targeted are long term parking areas with reduced visibility and traffic; the commuter lots and train station parking.

So what can be done to prevent this?

1. Park in well lit areas.
2. Have your vehicle alarm adjusted for sensitivity.
3. Speak with your mechanic about getting a catalytic converter lock, having the converter welded to your vehicle and/or engraving your converter with your vehicle ID number.
4. Check out your local auto parts store for any catalytic converter theft deterrent systems.
5. If parking at home, make sure to have your vehicle in an area where motion lights activate.
6.. Always call the police when you see something or someone suspicious.
