HAMDEN, CT — Deputy Chief John Cappiello will be appointed Acting Police Chief, effect 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1, Mayor Curt Balzano Leng announced on Friday. Cappiello has served as Hamden’s Deputy Police Chief, alongside Chief Thomas Wydra, since his appointment in 2006 by former Mayor Craig Henrici. Cappiello has served with the Hamden Police Department for 34 years, starting his career in February, 1984.

“I am very confident that soon-to-be Acting Chief Cappiello will ensure Hamden’s Police Department runs effectively and efficiently,” Leng said in a statement. “Chief Cappiello has worked alongside retiring Chief Wydra since their mutual appointments in 2006, and over that time period has tirelessly sought to improve the Hamden Police Department as a whole. Chief Cappiello’s service and performance as Deputy affords me every confidence in his leadership skills, and his ability to ensure that the essential public safety services Hamden residents expect are delivered and enjoyed in our community. I look forward to working with Acting Chief Cappiello over the coming weeks, and towards ensuring Hamden’s Police Department remains an example of effective and community-centered law enforcement.”
