Best-Selling Author's Condition Improves After Head-On Crash

Meriden's Laura Van Wormer was critically injured in a crash with a wrong-way driver on the Wilbur Cross Parkway in Hamden two weeks ago.

Best-selling author Laura Van Wormer, 59, of Meriden, still has a long way to go in her recovery from a head-on collision in Hamden two weeks ago but her condition was upgraded to fair on Monday, according to the Meriden Record-Journal.

The Record-Journal reports Van Wormer, who was listed in critical condition for two weeks, was taken off a ventilator on Sunday and is breathing on her own.

Van Wormer, who was on her way to La Guardia Airport to fly out for a meeting with actress Betty White about a book, was struck by another vehicle that was driving in the wrong direction on the Wilbur Cross Parkway.

State police are investigating the crash, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Route 15 between the Heroes’ Tunnel and Exit 60 on June 14.

The driver of the other vehicle, Wilian Chavez-Sanchez, was also taken to Yale after the accident.
