Bill Would Require Quinnipiac to Pay Tax on Homes Rented to Students

The bill was passed during a special session.

“An Act Concerning the Preservation of Municipal Tax Bases”, which specifically addresses the situation in Hamden, passed the Senate during a special session, the paper reports. Quinnipiac University owns a number of single-family homes that it rents to students.

According to the Register, the legislation was created as the homes are tax-exempt because they are owned by the university but are not used for educational purposes. Taxing the properties would bring in between $350,000 and $400,000 a year to the town.
