Press release from Cabrera for 17th State Senate:

Hamden, Conn, 5/19/2020 - Jorge Cabrera has won the endorsement of the Democrats of the 17th State Senate District, winning 39 delegates to 10 delegates for the opposition. The 17th State Senate District is composed of the towns of Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, and Ansonia, along with portions of Woodbridge, Hamden, and Naugatuck. Jorge is a Hamden resident, where he lives with his wife, Rebecca, and their two sons.

Jorge was the endorsed Democrat for the same seat in 2018, where he lost to the incumbent by a slim 77 votes difference, after a recount. Cabrera is running because he believes in putting the families of the district first.

“We deserve a State Senator that will fight to make sure the people of the 17th State Senate District have jobs that pay a living wage, quality health care they can afford and can retire with dignity and respect. We need a State Senator that understands the struggles families face. I will fight to make sure our kids have schools that are adequately funded, affordable college, and more middle-class jobs. We must also make sure our small businesses first survive and then thrive.”

A graduate of Quinnipiac University, Jorge is currently a business representative & union organizer with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 919 and was one of the leaders in last year’s successful Stop & Shop strike.

“Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic we are living in has exposed the extreme income inequality in our state. The economic impact of this pandemic will impact us all for a long time to come. To ensure that we have enough PPE, testing, and hospital capacity to fight the virus, we must demand that the ultra-wealthy in our state pay their fair share of taxes.”
