‘Changing the Autism Conversation toward Acceptance'

HAMDEN - Journalist Eric Garcia will discuss, “Changing the Autism Conversation toward Acceptance,” at Quinnipiac University on Friday, Oct. 29.

The event, to be held virtually and in person in room 118 of the Center for Communications and Engineering on the Mount Carmel Campus, starts at 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public. It is part of the School of Communications’ dean’s speaker series.

“Eric Garcia is one of the leading journalists in Washington, and he’s written an incredible book about being autistic, dispelling myths and discussing the social and policy gaps in supporting people on the spectrum,” said Christopher Roush, dean of the School of Communications. “I’m proud that he’s chosen to come share these insights with the Quinnipiac University community.”
Garcia, is a senior Washington correspondent for “The Independent” and the author of “We're Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation.”

Garcia will discuss his book, speak and talk about how autistic self-advocates have worked to move discussions about autism from curing toward more acceptance of the condition. He also will talk about what it’s like to be a communicator with autism.

“I am thrilled to be coming to one of the most pre-eminent universities in the country,” Garcia said. “I look forward to interacting with this vibrant community."

In addition, Garcia is an assistant editor for The Washington Post’s Outlook section and an associate editor of The Hill. He also was a staff writer at MarketWatch, National Journal and Roll Call.
