Police are warning residents of a telephone scam that is targeting the elderly and claims to be from the New Haven County Sherriff's Office.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Police are warning residents of a recent telephone scam that is targeting the elderly and has scammed one resident out of $1,000.

The Hamden Police Department has investigated three telephone scams involving the elderly within the past week, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said the caller has identified himself as a “Lieutenant” from the New Haven County Sheriff’s Office and advises the elderly resident that there is a warrant for their arrest.

The victim is then instructed to proceed to Renshaw Road with either a money order or a “Green Dot” gift card, according to Smith.

The caller then instructs the victim to read him the numbers on the gift card, prior to their arrival on Renshaw Road.

Smith said that there has been one Hamden resident that has been defrauded of $1,000.

“Residents should be aware that no legitimate law enforcement agency will contact them and ask them to meet at a random location with bond money,” Smith said in a press release. “Furthermore, no legitimate law enforcement agency will accept gift cards as a form of payment.”

If you are contacted, residents are urged to call their local police department to report the scam and/or verify the information that they have been provided.
