Flood Elevation Certificates - What Homeowners Should Know

After marking the one year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, we thought it would be another good time to reach out to our community regarding the 2012 Flood Insurance Reform Act.   FEMA’s (Federal Emergency Management Administration) changes to the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) have dictated many changes for homeowners when it comes to securing flood insurance.

One Notable Change:

Many homeowners are now being asked by their insurance companies to provide a Flood Elevation Certificate to rate their flood insurance premium as a requirement by the NFIP.   Due to the Flood Insurance Reform ACT, homeowners that may not have been required to provide this type of documentation in the past are now being asked to do so in order to rate their flood insurance premium.

Securing a Flood Elevation Certificate can be an expense if this type of information isn’t available through a local floodplain manager.  However, it’s an investment that can save certain homeowners a substantial amount of money annually on flood insurance premium.
