Hamden Republican Party Convention
Tuesday, July 18th at 7:00, 3rd Floor Conference Room at Hamden’s Government Center (corner of Dixwell and Evergreen), the Hamden Republican Party will be holding their convention to endorse candidates to run in the upcoming November local election. The Republican Party is looking for candidates to fill 9 districts positions, 4 At-Large positions, Town Clerk, mayor and Board of Ed positions. Unlike the Democrats, Republicans are struggling to find candidates to fill these positions. Any Hamden resident registered as a Republican can be considered. If you have any questions you can contact Holly Bryk Chairman of the Hamden Republican Town Committee on 203-676-3603.
You may be asking why the Republicans are struggling. The answer lies in the numbers. There are 4 to 5 registered Democrats to every Registered Republican. The Democrats have been in power for so long that they have no concern of ever giving up power in Hamden. This should be disconcerting for voters for the simple reason that no one is taking a hard look at the inner workings of local government. The bid process, contracts, labor negotiations are all taken for granted. There are so few Republicans on the Town Council that they have become completely irrelevant and for all intents and purposes non-existent. Unchallenged, single-party rule is corrosive and corrupting.

Change is not only needed, but is required. Just as a car radiator needs to be flushed occasionally, so does local government. It all starts with elections. While the numbers of Democrats can seem overwhelming stacked against any Republican candidate, they are not insurmountable. Independents can change the outcome of any election. While the entrenched Democrats slumbered, an active rebellion from within their ranks hope to overthrow the existing power structure. Should they prevail, taxpayers may as well just surrender. Now is the time, if you are civic minded and sick-to-death of single-party rule, to consider running as a Republican candidate. Voters need a reason to change. You can be that reason. Experience is not necessary, only willingness to serve. See you on the 18th.
