Hamden Wins SCC Girls Basketball Championship, Beats Rival Sacred Heart Academy

The Hamden girls basketball team claimed its second straight SCC title with a win over town rival Sacred Heart Academy on Wednesday.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden claimed its second straight SCC girls basketball championship with an 82-58 victory over town rival Sacred Heart Academy in the title game Wednesday night at the M&T Bank Arena at Quinnipiac University.

It was the fifth overall SCC title for the Green Dragons, who also beat Sacred Heart in last year’s final, by a score of 70-57. Hamden also won the conference championship in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Sacred Heart won the SCC championship in 2022, and also claimed the D-2 title in 2021 when two tournaments were held due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Hamden’s Kamora Moore was selected as the SCC Girls Basketball Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, according to SCC Commissioner Al Carbone.

Moore finished with 16 points against Sacred Heart, while Alana Philpotts scored a game-high 21 points and Gianna Donnarummo added 20 points, according to GameTimeCT.

Emily Mennillo led Sacred Heart with 20 points, while Morgan Miller had 16 points and Lauren Thompson added 10 points.

Hamden now turns its attention to trying to repeat as Class LL champions when the state tournament gets underway next week. The Green Dragons won the program’s first-ever state title with a 63-48 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe in last year’s championship game.

Hamden is the tournament’s No. 3 seed and will have a first-round bye.

Sacred Heart Academy earned the tournament’s No. 1 seed, and also has a first-round bye.
