HAMDEN – Journalism professor Kathy Roberts Forde will discuss her new book, “Journalism and Jim Crow: White Supremacy and the Struggle for a New America," at Quinnipiac University on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
The event, sponsored by the School of Communications, will be held virtually and in person at the Carol Hansen Student Center, room 119, on the Mount Carmel Campus. It starts at 4:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Forde is a journalism professor as well as associate dean of equity and inclusion in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts. Her book details how the mainstream white press worked to help embed racism in journalism and society and the Black press risked everything to expose it.
“Dr. Forde’s book has increasing importance right now as we all come to grips with what is happening in this country and how it happened,” said Christopher Roush, dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac. “We’re excited to have her come speak to our community about the importance of understanding the history behind racial relationships.”
Forde served as chair of UMass Journalism from 2014-2017. She is past chair of the AEJMC History Division and past associate editor of American Journalism.
Forde’s book, "Literary Journalism on Trial: Masson v. New Yorker and the First Amendment," received the Frank Luther Mott-KTA book award and the AEJMC History Division book award. Her newsletter, "Letter from a Region," discusses issues of race, journalism, history, and politics, often tying these topics to current events.
Forde has taught undergraduate courses in American journalism history, American media and civil rights history, media law, literary journalism, and information gathering and evaluation. She has taught graduate seminars in mass communication history and qualitative methods in communication research.
