Police Cracking Down On Distracted Driving In Hamden
Hamden Police announce the "U Drive. U Text. U Pay" campaign in which special patrols targeting distracted drivers will be deployed.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Police will be targeting distracted drivers as part of the second portion of the “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign. Between Aug. 2 and Aug. 16, the Hamden Police Department will be partnering with the Connecticut Department of Transportation as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Officers will be looking for distracted drivers as part of the “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign, police announced on Wednesday. Police said the endeavor is a high visibility effort to enforce distracted driving laws. (To sign up for Hamden breaking news alerts and more, click here.)
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,477 people were killed and an estimated 391,000 injured, in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2015.

The Hamden Police Department and the Connecticut Department of Transportation “urge motorists to put down the phone when getting behind the wheel. If it’s necessary to text, park your vehicle in a safe location first.”
During the first portion of the campaign, which took place between April 4 and April 29, Hamden Police issued a total of 866 infractions.
