Quinnipiac Sues Hamden Over Bed Debate

The town and the university have clashed over the number of campus beds that are required to be offered to undergrads.

Quinnipiac University is suing the Town of Hamden in an ongoing debate over the number of beds offered to undergraduate students.

Kate Ramunni of the New Haven Register reports Quinnipiac filed the lawsuit at New Haven Superior Court in an attempt to undo the Zoning Board of Appeals recent denial of the university’s appeal of a violation notice tied to its 2007 York Hill dormitory project and to have the fines the town has issued over the violation waived.

At issue is a condition of the approval for the dorm project in which it was required that Quinnipiac provide a bed for every student to reduce the number of undergraduate students living off-campus in residential neighborhoods.

Quinnipiac hasn’t done that, but argues that it does provide one bed for every undergraduate student who wants one, according to Ramunni.

However, Hamden has argued that the condition required Quinnipiac to have one bed for every student whether or not the bed is used and therefore the school is about 1,315 beds short, according to previous reports.
