Quinnipiac University accounting students assist nearly 300 local residents with tax preparation

HAMDEN, Conn. – Accounting students at Quinnipiac University demonstrated their skills this spring while also supporting local residents.

The accounting students assisted 282 taxpayers, preparing 550 federal and state tax returns. Refunds totaling more than $425,000 were generated for taxpayers in the greater Hamden and New Haven community.

According to Matthew Maron, an assistant teaching professor of accounting and the VITA program coordinator, the volunteers saved taxpayers about $96,000 in tax preparation fees.

“The accolades belong to the student volunteers, without whom our VITA program would not exist,” Maron said. “The students logged in an impressive 492 volunteer hours this past tax season. Our accounting student volunteers represented Quinnipiac in a professional, courteous and caring manner in their interactions with the taxpayers.

“On numerous occasions, taxpayers commented on how wonderful it was to have Quinnipiac and its students giving back to the community in this meaningful way,” Maron added.
