Gunshots Strike Home, 2 Charged With Stealing Car: Hamden Police
A 19-year-old and a 16-year-old were arrested after stealing a car while fleeing from being shot at in Hamden, according to police.
HAMDEN, CT — Two New Haven residents were arrested after police say they stole a car in a business parking lot after being shot at Saturday evening in Hamden. The situation began unfolding around 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 7 when Hamden Police responded to Saint Mary Street on the report of shots fired. Hamden Police had received an alert from the New Haven Police Department’s ShotSpotter that gunshots were fired in the area, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.
Smith said a group of three people had hid inside of a detached garage on Saint Mary Street and a member of the group fired multiple shots at two people that were walking by. No one was struck by the gunfire, according to Smith.
Several bullets struck a Saint Mary Street residence and one of the rounds went through a window, according to Smith.

Smith said the bullet went across a bedroom and embedded inside of a wall. There were three people inside of the home at the time of the shooting.
The two people that had been shot ran from the area toward Alling Street. They saw a vehicle that was “idling” in the parking lot of a local business on Dixwell Avenue and entered the vehicle in an attempt to steal it, according to Smith.

Smith said an employee of the business attempted to intervene and one of the suspects pointed a gun at him and they stole the vehicle. They were last seen speeding eastbound on Morse Street.
Shortly thereafter, members of the New Haven Police Department found the occupied stolen vehicle on John Williamson Drive and the two occupants were apprehended after a foot pursuit, according to Smith.
Jayvon Prevost, 19, of Wayfarer Street in New Haven, was arrested and charged with second-degree larceny. He was detained on a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 20.
A 16-year-old New Haven resident was also arrested and charged with second-degree larceny. He is scheduled to appear at Juvenile Court in New Haven.
The Hamden Police Department Major Crimes Division is continuing the investigation.
