Shots Fired Leads to Drug Bust in Hamden

Hamden Police found heroin and marijuana in a vehicle that sustained damage from a bullet and arrested the vehicle's occupants.

Hamden Police arrested two men on drug charges after responding to a report of shots fired early Sunday morning.

Police responded to the area of Augur Street and Francis Avenue at about 1 a.m. on Jan. 3 on the report of shots fired.

Moments later, officers located a motor vehicle that was parked in front of a Francis Avenue residence that had sustained damage from a bullet, Capt. Ronald Smith said in a press release.

Smith said officers detained Omar Lewis, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, officers detained the operator of the vehicle, Barry White, who was hiding inside of a Francis Avenue apartment.

Both men told police that someone had fired gunshots at their vehicle.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 33.3 grams of heroin and 2.8 grams of marijuana.

Lewis and White were promptly arrested and transported to Hamden Police Headquarters.

Hamden Police arrested:

  • Omar Lewis, 27, of 187 Saltonstall Avenue in New Haven. He was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with the intent to sell, possession of marijuana and interfering with a police officer. Lewis, who was detained on a $10,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Jan. 14.
  • Barry White Jr., 27, of 669 Third Avenue in West Haven. He was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with the intent to sell, possession of marijuana and interfering with a police officer. White, who was detained on a $25,000 bond, is also scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 14.
