Summer Events to Kick Off Soon

Free Concert Series, Fireworks to Name a Few

Summer's almost here, and for many town residents that means fireworks and free concerts, and a newly-formed department is working to make that happen.

The town's Arts Commission and Recreation Department have combined to form the Arts, Recreation and Culture Department. Arts Commission director Mimsie Coleman will oversee the newly formed department as the coordinator.

The combination of the two departments will enhance and combine creativity, town officials say, while saving money for the town.

The Arts Commission, like many other organizations today, is dealing with the challenges of rising costs and declining donations, Coleman said. It is operating on a very tight budget this year, she said, with the goal being that the public never sees any change of offering of events and activities. The programs remain in tact and events are open to the public and free, she said.

With summer not far off, Hamden’s summer activities are about to kick off. July 1 begins the busy time for the town's arts and recreation programs.

One of the most popular events offered by the commission is the free concerts at Town Center Park. This year there are a series of five concerts that will be offered from July 1 through July 29 with bands covering three decades of music, from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

Negotiations are still ongoing, Coleman said, but two of the five are already in place.

The United States Army Field Band will perform July 2, the same night of the annual fireworks display. The Spinners coming July 22, will perform favorites like “Working My Way Back to You” and “Rubberband Man” to name a few.

All concerts are held on Fridays, 7:30 pm at Town Center Park at Meadowbrook, 2761 Dixwell Ave.  Food will be available for purchase there the night of the concerts.

In the event of bad weather, the concerts will be moved to Hamden High School if the building is available, Coleman said. Cancellation information will be broadcast on WQUN AM 1220 or WEBE 108(107.9) FM.

On Friday, May 20, the commission will sponsor "A Salute to Young Artist”  at Thornton Wilder Hall, to recognize Hamden students gifted in the arts.

This year the students are all seniors and are being recognized for visual arts, voice and music and other artistic talents. They will be awarded a citation issued by the Mayor’s office. Admission is free and everyone is urged come support the students.

All members of the Art Commission are volunteers. All have a background or a strong interest in the arts. Donations are accepted, and volunteers are needed to help with events. The support of volunteers allows the commission to continue to offer free events to the community, Coleman said.
