Suspect Assaults Two AMR Members Inside Ambulance, Six Police Officers Hospitalized: Hamden Police

Police responded to a violent knife fight between two roommates and one of them removed himself from the stretcher while being transported.

Six Hamden Police Officers were sent to the hospital following an incident in which a man who was involved in a violent knife fight with his roommate removed himself from the stretcher inside the ambulance and assaulted two AMR members, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said the officers were sent to the hospital for evaluations of blood exposure and/or injury.

Police responded to 1879 State Street, 1st floor, on the report of a domestic dispute involving a knife at about 3:30 p.m. on July 30, according to Smith.

Moments later officers observed Andrew Stolar, lying on the floor, with multiple lacerations. Officers determined that Stolar and his roommate, Shawn Williams were involved in a violent physical altercation. They were both promptly arrested and placed in separate ambulances for transportation to Yale – New Haven Hospital.

Smith said that shortly after American Medical Response personnel began transporting Stolar to the hospital, the ambulance returned to the State Street residence because Stolar removed himself from the stretcher and was causing a disturbance.

Investigation revealed that Stolar assaulted two members of AMR, while being transported. Several Hamden Police officers subsequently assisted in restraining Stolar.

Hamden Police arrested Andrew Stolar, 32, of 1879 State Street, 1st floor, Hamden, on charges of two counts of assault on emergency medical personnel and disorderly conduct. Stolar, who was detained on a $25,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden today (July 31).

Shawn Williams, 52, of 1879 State Street, 1st floor, Hamden, was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct. Williams, who was detained on a $25,000 bond, is also scheduled to appear in court on July 31.
