Tenant Abandons at Least 18 Cats, Two Found Dead Inside Apartment: Hamden Police

Police are investigating the animal cruelty case after the tenant moved out several weeks ago and left the cats without food or water.

Hamden, CT — Hamden Police are investigating an animal cruelty case after a tenant moved out of an apartment several weeks ago, leaving at least 18 cats behind and two cats were found dead this in the apartment morning.

Hamden Animal Control responded to 13 Augur Street at about 10:30 a.m. on July 6 on the report of animal cruelty, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said animal control officers learned that Halfway Home Rescue removed 16 cats from the third floor of the residence on July 2. The cats were transported to Beacon Valley Animal Hospital for medical treatment.

This morning, Hamden Animal Control located two dead felines inside of the apartment.

Smith said investigation has revealed that the tenant moved out of the residence several weeks ago, leaving the cats behind and there were no signs of food or water inside of the apartment.

Quinnipiac Valley Health District responded and condemned the property.

The investigation is continuing.
