HAMDEN - The Sports Journalism Institute has selected Quinnipiac University student Toyloy Brown III, a senior journalism major from Bronx, New York, to be among the 18 students in its 30th class.

Brown and the other members of the SJI’s Class of 2022 will attend a weeklong bootcamp at Arizona State University in May, where they will hear from newsroom professionals and academics on topics ranging from ethics in the press box, to diversity in the media, to tips on beat coverage.

SJI training emphasizes deadline reporting and writing, whether in person or via zoom. After completing the bootcamp, Brown, the first Quinnipiac student to be selected for this program, will begin an internship at USA Today.

“It is hard for me to find the words that fully convey how grateful I am to be accepted into the Sports Journalism Institute and to soon intern at USA Today,” said Brown, who is managing editor of the Quinnipiac Chronicle student newspaper. “I am truly honored to be selected and look forward to everything they have in store for me and the 17 other students in my class. Joining the SJI family makes me even more motivated to reach the sports writing dreams I've had since I was 14.”

At the institute, the students also will hear from SJI alums who have used the program as a launching pad to careers at places such as ESPN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today and The Athletic.

“TJ Brown is a student who immediately caught my eye as having talent and drive, so this honor is not a surprise,” said Christopher Roush, dean of Quinnipiac’s School of Communications. “He will go far in the world of journalism and be a name everybody knows.”
