Women Charged with Assaulting Hamden Woman in Her Bedroom

Police say the women forcible entered the home early Sunday morning and one was in possession of a hammer.

Two New Haven women were charged with breaking into a Fitch Street home and assaulting a 31-year-old woman in her bedroom early Sunday morning.

Police responded to 655 Fitch Street around 1:30 a.m. on the report of an assault, Capt. Ronald Smith said in a press release.

Smith said investigation revealed that the 31 year-old victim was asleep in her bedroom when she heard a “banging” sound outside of her front door.

Moments later, two individuals forced entry and proceeded to her bedroom, where she was assaulted. The victim, who sustained minor injuries to her face and back, related that one of the individuals was in the possession of a hammer, according to Smith.

Officers quickly arrested the individuals responsible, Jamesha Belton and Shantasia Mabery.

Smith said Mabery was apprehended by Officer Peter Conti after a foot pursuit.

Belton, 22, of 41 Osborn Avenue, New Haven, and Mabery, 22, of 291 Scarborough Drive, Apartment 907, New Haven, were both arrested on charges of first-degree burglary, third-degree assault and interfering with a police officer.

Belton and Mabery, who were both detained at police headquarters on a $10,000 bond, are scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on June 16.
