Boxing Movie To Be Filmed In Hartford

A biopic of a famous Connecticut boxer will be shot in the state.

HARTFORD, CT — The film "Pep," a biopic of 20th-century of boxing legend will be filmed in Hartford, according to Variety. The film will be made by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian WayProductions, Singapore’s Golden Ratio Films, and Canada’s Blisspoint Entertainment.

Willie Pep, who was from Middletown, was a featherweight boxer who had an extraordinarily long career spanning 26 years and almost 2,000 rounds as a professional. The film is set in 1965 during one of Pep's comebacks, as the boxer finds himself in debt and supporting a much younger wife and a drug addict son.

"Band of Brothers" actor James Madio and Keir Gilchrist ("Atypical") will star in the movie, alongside Ron Livingston ("Office Space") according to Variety.

IMDb describes the movie as: "The true life story of world champion Willie Pep, the fighter with the most wins in professional boxing and his long-shot journey out of retirement and back into the ring."

Connecticut has become a popular location for films in recent years. Denise Richards and Patrick Muldoon were filming "The Junkyard Dogs" recently in Cromwell.

The state has also been the backdrop for numerous Christmas movies, especially those on the Hallmark Channel. Last year, "One Royal Holiday" was filmed in Woodstock, Putnam, and Hartford.

"Holiday For Heroes," filmed in several Southeastern Connecticut towns, was released in 2019.

In 2018, "Christmas On Honeysuckle Lane" appeared on Hallmark and was shot in Wethersfield.
