Mortensen Riverfront Plaza

Enjoy happy hour running along the river in the capital region with a series of race options. Kick off the summer weekend early with the popular Thursday evening 5K in Hartford, the first of three Riverfront races.
After the 3.1 mile race, cool off with an ice cold craft brew from New England Brewing Company (21+ w/ID only) at the Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. Each race participant will receive custom designed swag and enjoy a mini mac attack from our friends at Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ.
Riverfront Summer Series: A trio of varying race distances on Thursday evenings, the multi-race series welcomes moving with friends and celebrating summer evenings. Comprised of Hartford’s Riverfront 5K in June, the redesigned Riverfront 4 Mile on a different Hartford course in July and the Riverfront 5 Mile in East Hartford in August. Connecticut's Old State House

“Catman Bill” Katz grew up in Hartford in the 1950s and 1960s. Within a few short years I purchased my first acoustic guitar and learned to play right-handed and I’m left-handed. He purchased his first acoustic guitar and learned to play right-handed (although left-handed) a few years after hearing a couple rehearsing across from his family’s home on lower Laurel Street. Bill was influenced by the folk music movement; Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, Reverend Gary Davis, Pete Seeger, Mississippi John Hurt, and on and on. Bill’s moved and inspired to write about events around him.

Connecticut’s Old State House is pleased to participate in LONG WEEKEND, a city-wide festival where the City of Hartford takes center stage from Wednesday, July 1 to Sunday, July 5! Come celebrate history through the lenses of film, art, music, culture, and technology. It’s a modern gathering rooted in the place where America first learned to write itself into existence.
Did you know that General George Washington and Alexander Hamilton stood on the grounds of Connecticut’s Old State House in September of 1780 to meet with French General Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau and the Marquis de Lafayette? This meeting marked the start of an alliance that led to American independence and ended the Revolutionary War.
Connecticut’s Old State House stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of our state’s democratic evolution, having housed all three branches of Connecticut’s government from 1796 to 1878.
This historic site has borne witness to some of the most pivotal narratives of freedom, democracy, and civic engagement in our state's history, including the landmark Amistad and Prudence Crandall trials, as well as the Constitutional Convention of 1818. Each of these events not only shaped the legal and social framework of Connecticut but also ignited a spirit of civic responsibility that resonates to this day!
Come for a tour and see Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait of our nation's first president. Visit the historic House and Senate chambers and see the office of Connecticut’s current Kid Governor and cabinet. Check out an interactive exhibit in the Mortensen Gallery and the portraits and odd collection housed in Joseph Steward’s Museum of Curiosities.
Connecticut’s Old State house is located just steps away from restaurants, entertainment and shopping.

Where better to celebrate America’s 250th than Connecticut’s Old State House, the spot where Connecticut’s patriots conspired, debated, and dared to break with a crown? Step inside the historic courtroom — transformed into a colonial tavern alive with the spirit of 1776. Enjoy tavern fare and conversation as:
Historian Dr. Matthew Warshauer of Central Connecticut State University traces Connecticut’s bold march to independence: from Common Sense and the firebrand Connecticut Courant, to the moment Governor Trumbull called an emergency Assembly on June 14, 1776 and Connecticut declared itself free.
Re-enactor Dayne Rugh steps into the boots of Jonathan Trumbull, giving voice to Connecticut’s own Proclamation of Independence.
Musician Richard Franklin Donohue performs a fiery repertoire of revolutionary-era “musick,” setting the unmistakable mood of a colony on the edge of history.

People have been using medals, statues, and even souvenir plates as way to honor important moments throughout history. Using inspiration from items in the Museum’s collection, families can design a new way to celebrate their own special event.
While visiting, families can also check out our new exhibitions, Drawn Here: Stories of Hartford’s North End and Rebellious, explorations of moments of change throughout Connecticut history.
Families can continue the learning at home with a Family Activity Kit, a take-home bag full of activities, crafts, and images of items from the museum’s collection. Creative Writing and Memoir Writing Workshop Series Two creative writing workshops are offered this summer. The first will be for open forms and begin on July 6th. The second will focus on memoir writing and will start on July&nbsp;8th. They will both meet at Saint James Church, 1018 Farmington Avenue&nbsp; in West Hartford.&nbsp; The&nbsp;dates for open&nbsp;forms are: 7/6. 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3, and 8/10. These are all Mondays. The dates for the memoir workshops are: 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, and 8/12. These are&nbsp; Wednesdays. They will both meet from 7:00-8:30 p.m.. The cost is $240.00, and payment is for the series. Sign ups&nbsp;are on a first come first served basis. Registration is required.&nbsp; Writing instructor David Pontrelli is a&nbsp;&nbsp;graduate of Wesleyan University, a certified Connecticut English teacher, and a certified Amherst&nbsp;Writers&nbsp;and Artists&nbsp;workshop&nbsp;leader. HIs participants represent a wide range of ages and abilities, from inner-city children to adult professional&nbsp;writers. The&nbsp;workshops&nbsp;he leads&nbsp;stress participant safety and create an enhanced sense of community. Cedar Hill Cemetery

While Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, is laid to rest in Elmira, New York, many of his Hartford companions and cohorts are interred at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Admission to the program is $10.00 and free for Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation and Mark Twain House &amp; Museum members. Cedar Hill Cemetery is located at 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford. The walking tour begins at the flagpole at the end of the entrance drive.
