Despite State Pink Slips, UConn Doles Out Raises

Hartford, CT - Though the state has laid off dozens of workers in recent months, the University of Connecticut reportedly is sticking to a pledge to give four senior staff members multi-year pay increases.

UConn President Susan Herbst promised the raises in 2013 and 2014 to the to the school's general counsel Richard Orr, chief architect Laura Cruickshank, chief of staff Rachel Rubin and deputy chief of staff Michael Kirk, writes the Hartford Courant.

School officials said the raises fulfilled contractual obligations. Additionally, a university spokesperson told CT Mirror that the raises helped to retain important staff members, or were the reflection of an increase in responsibility or other individual circumstance.

By comparison, Gov. Dannel Malloy cancelled raises for state government managers once Connecticut's difficult fiscal situation became apparent.
