No Raises for Connecticut Government Managers

State officials made the announcement Monday.

With the state's coffers plunging into the red, Connecticut's government managerial employees will not receive raises this year, officials announced.

In a letter to agency heads on Monday, Brian Durand, Chief of Staff for Gov. Dannel Malloy, and Office of Policy and Management Secretary Ben Barnes outlined the move, acknowledging that the administration was reversing an earlier decision.

Raises were scheduled for this month, but they have now been canceled. However, the two were quick to add that it was not a reflection on the "excellent and valuable work" department managers were doing.

"Today, however, the state's fiscal situation has deteriorated significantly," they wrote, adding that the raises were no longer feasible. "The most recent estimate by OPM is that next year's budget has a shortfall of at least $570 million and OFA has projected it at as high as $900 million. We have a responsibility to the taxpayers of Connecticut not to move forward with managerial raises at a time when so many state programs will see reductions and while many state jobs are likely to be eliminated."
