Hartford Festival To Celebrate Female Music Composers

The Women Composers Festival of Hartford promotes the music of contemporary and historical women composers.

HARTFORD, CT — The Women Composers Festival of Hartford will hold its annual showcase of women’s music on Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18, at Trinity College's Gruss Music Center.

The Gruss Center is in the heart of the Trinity campus, which is at 300 Summit St., Hartford.

Established in 2001, the Women Composers Festival of Hartford promotes the music
of contemporary and historical women composers.

This year’s festival will feature Composer-in-Residence Maria Kaoutzani, a Ph.D.
candidate at the University of Chicago, and Ensemble-in-Residence, Chartreuse, an
all-women American string trio committed to commissioning and premiering new
works.

2023 Festival schedule is as follow:

Friday, March 17

12:30 to 3 p.m.: Scholarly Symposium, presentations of research and
history of women composers including a talk by the Composer-in-Residence.

4to 6 p.m.: Emerging Composers Workshop, new pieces by four
young composers played and discussed by the Ensemble-in-Residence.

Saturday, March 18

9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Music Marathon, a day-long presentation of works by
contemporary and historical women composers.

7 p.m. reception / 7:30 p.m. feature concert: Chartreuse string trio performs a
newly commissioned work by Composer-in-Residence Maria Kaoutzani and
selected pieces from the Festival’s international competition.

All admission fees are tax deductible donations.

Two-Day Festival Pass: $75 ($50 for students and seniors 55 and up), One-Day Festival
Pass: $45 ($30 for students and seniors 55 and up). Virtual admission: $50.
