WETHERSFIELD/ROCKY HILL/HARTFORD, CT — A 31-year-old Hartford man is accused by Connecticut State Police of traveling up to 125 miles per hour last year on Interstate 91 in Wethersfield and Rocky Hill.

According to police, the incident actually happened on Nov. 24, 2024, but after police broke off a pursuit due to safety concerns, an investigation ensued.

That probe resulted in charges on Sunday, Jan. 26, against Hartford resident Richard V. Gonzalez, 31, who turned himself in to state police at Troop H in Hartford Sunday after learning of an arrest warrant against him.

According to police, Gonzalez was charged with reckless driving; disobeying the signal of an officer; engaging police in pursuit; failure to drive in the proper lane; improper passing (unsafe distance); and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Police said it all started Nov. 24, 2024, at about 4:50 p.m. when a trooper out of Troop H was conducting traffic speed enforcement operations on I-91 North near Exit 24 in Rocky Hill.

That's when a white Acura MDX was observed traveling at a high rate of speed, faster than the flow of traffic.

Police said the trooper clocked the motorist going 104 mph in a posted 65 mph area.

The trooper activated his emergency lights and sirens, and the operator failed to stop, accelerating to speeds greater than 125 mph in Wethersfield while making unsafe lane changes, and driving in the shoulder, police said.

"Due to the safety of the public and after obtaining the registration of the vehicle, the trooper disengaged," wrote Connecticut State Police in a statement on Monday, Jan. 27.

Police said the owner of a motor vehicle was uncooperative with State Police when contacted and refused to meet with troopers.

That changed on Sunday, police said, Gonzalez turned himself into State Police at Troop H after learning of an active warrant for his arrest.
